of square cross-section and circular pierced hole form in three tiers, the square sections enriched with various calligraphy figures, alternating with mythical beasts in low relief, with various other markings; the whole retaining traces of archeological patination

 

Though scholars are still undecided, the general belief is the round section indicates “heaven” and the square section “earth”.  The interior hole penetrates to the bottom, implying “communicating between the heaven and the earth”.

 Possibly 4th-3rd Millenium B.C.E.
