GREY SCHIST BUDDHA FRAGMENT

of fully realized carved and moulded standing form, left arm raised, wearing a sanghati wrapped around the left shoulder with graceful u-shaped pleats falling below the waist; the statue's left hand, now broken off, was most likely raised with the palm facing outwards, the gesture of reassurance (abhaya mudra).
Possibly from the Region of Gandhara (present day Pakistan)

Comparable pieces are known in the Royal Ontario Museum, see Homage to Heaven, Homage to Earth, 1992, p.163, pl.92 and in the Eskenzi exhibtion (Sculpture and ornament in early Chinese art, London, 11 June-13 July 1996, no. 31).
